Dart Mountain Cheese
When you bite into a chunk of Dart Mountain Cheese – served in LegenDerry eateries including the Walled City Brewery and White Horse Hotel, and available for purchase on the Tamnagh Foods website – you’re experiencing so much more than just a delicious, multi award-winning product.
These handmade, artisan cheeses – from Banagher Bold (creamy with a hint of local ale) to black label Tirkeeran (extra hard and aged for at least seven months) – are bursting with local history and heritage, and firmly rooted in the Sperrins.
It’s here, with stunning Dart Mountain in the distance, that Julie and Kevin Hickey converted a disused farm shed to pursue their passion for cheese. They created their first product, Sperrin Blue, in 2014, and went on to scoop gold in the Irish Food Awards. More delicious cheeses and multiple awards followed, but you still won’t find any mass production here; Julie and Kevin, who also produce flavour-packed Tamnagh Foods granola, chutneys and tangy relishes, remain committed to small batches and traditional processes. Cheese wheels are turned every couple of days, and carefully rubbed down once a week; as Kevin says, “they’re looked after like wee babies”. You can visit Dart Mountain Cheese for yourself on a brilliant Beer & Cheese Tour in conjunction with Northbound Brewery.
