Doherty’s Meats is a true LegenDerry institution, supplying the city and its visitors with delicious minced beef, sausages and more for nearly 200 years.
You can try its top-quality products in shops and restaurants across the city, or from its friendly street kitchen pop-up at events such as Derry Halloween’s LegenDerry Food Village. Ask a Derry person about Doherty’s, and they’ll share memories of their mother’s ‘Derry stews’, of students and emigrants being sent off on buses, trains and planes with a secret stash of Doherty’s Special Mince, and of succulent Doherty’s sausages sizzling in a pan, the crucial ingredient in a local breakfast fry-up.
This family-run firm dates back to 1830, when the first butcher shop was opened by James Doherty. Seamus Doherty, the fifth generation of Doherty’s Meats (whose two sons also work for the business), recalls “swinging like Tarzan on the meat hooks” as a young boy when the shop was closed, and recounts the story of a woman stopped by customs in Canada with a suitcase full of Special Mince (a tasty combination of beef, water, cereal and seasoning, now sold as Special Hamburger Meat). Much has changed for the business since then – with a focus on meat production, exciting new products, flavour combinations, and gluten free options – but its emphasis on top quality ingredients, and great taste, remains.
