Prem Epice Pickney
When a crop of juicy Bramley apples appeared in her garden, Antima Basu decided to turn them into homemade pickles and chutneys. Inspired by the cuisine of India, her home country, Antima experimented with different spice combinations and eventually created Apple Pickney – her unique combination of pickle and chutney.
Each batch of apples is baked in olive oil with roasted home-ground spices including chilli powder, mustard, fenugreek and cumin seeds. The result is a sweet sauce with a not-too-spicy kick. Free from artificial ingredients, it’s delicious served as a dip, on a cheeseboard, spread on sandwiches and wraps, or smeared over a burger.
Antima used to return to Derry after trips back to Northern India with some jars of pickle and chutney in her suitcase. Nowadays, it’s jars of her own pickney that she is bringing over to India for her relatives to enjoy – especially her mother, Prem, who the brand is named after. You can try it for yourself at selected retailers and markets.
