Have you ever tried an arepa? Or an empanada? If the answer’s no, stop by at La Tia Juana’s street food kitchen for an authentic taste of Latin America.
A regular fixture at local markets and events, La Tia Juana’s specialises in arepas – a traditional gluten-free Venezuelan corn bread, filled with beef, chicken or vegetables – and empanadas – deep fried, crispy corn pasties stuffed with meat or black turtle beans, plantain and vegetables.
The flavours might be international, but the ingredients are sourced surprisingly closer to home, including local beef and free-range chicken, and Inishowen mushrooms. And don’t forget some sauce too – chose from guasacaca salsa (with avocado, coriander, parsley, garlic and onion) or extra hot chilli salsa, if you dare!
La Tia Juana’s have also hosted pop-up kitchens at a couple of Derry’s most eclectic and well-known bars: Sandinos and Bennigans. You’ll spot their yellow, blue and red truck, in the colours of the Venezuelan flag, at markets and fairs in Derry, Strabane and beyond.
